In 2020, we all have been affected by the Corona virus and since the breakout of the Pandemic, we have been living in a different world. It happened only shortly after a big event, were many of us has a completely different, but less harmless virus: the Dakar virus.

For me personally, the Dakar rally has become part of my life, since I had joined this extraordinary event in 2004, back in Africa. I am one of the lucky people, who have experienced the original Dakar rally on the African continent.

It looked like disaster was striking in 2008. At Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisbon (Portugal), the then director of ASO, Etienne Lavigne revealed that the 2008 edition of the famous rally had to be cancelled, due to safety reasons.

The next year we left the African continent and went to Latin America, with the first edition in Argentina. This decision of ASO turned out to become a real pleasure. Argentina became one of my favorite countries. Thanks to the Dakar rally, we have been able to discover this exiting part of the world, with its passionate people and beautiful sceneries.

But the adventure had to move on, so the Dakar rally organization offered us the opportunity to discover a complete new part of the world, The Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately, a few months before the start of the rally, I had surgery one of my eyes. And I can assure you, that it’s a challenge for a photographer if it’s the right eye… So, for the first time in 17 years, I had to decide to stay home and support the Dakar Press Team from out of our office. Seeing all those amazing images, it was quite a challenge for me to stay home, not taking the next flight to Jeddah. But it sure encouraged me to publish the book of the new chapter in the Dakar history, to share the Dakar passion with you. Hope you will enjoy The Kingdom of Sand.
